Subject: Zogby Poll on Impeaching George W. Bush - PLEASE READ!

PLEASE READ:

Last week, John Zogby was interviewed and asked about doing a poll on impeaching bush (article below).  He said he would not ask any questions on impeaching bush on his own initiative, that he would only do it if he is hired to do it. I called Zogby and he confirmed that he will do poll questions on Impeaching Bush and related matters if he is paid to do it.

I don't see anybody else coming forward, so it looks like it's up to us.  If we don't raise the impeachment question in a poll and introduce it to the public, nobody else is going to do it.  And we desperately need this kind of information out there, to get the impeachment movement rolling, to start the conversation, and to reach people who aren't involved now, maybe out of intimidation and fear, and who need some support and encouragement to stand up and speak out. Once there is one poll and it is in the public domain, more polls and more discussion will follow.

I've opened a PayPal Business account under the name Zogby Impeachment Poll. There can be several people "on" a Business account with different levels of access which I why I chose this one,  so there will be checks and balances and no one will think anyone (me) is playing around with the funds. We also need a business account to accept credit cards and debit cards. (The Premier Account has the same fees, but only one person can have access.)

If the Pro-impeachment camp can't raise the money for this, we're not much of an anti-bush movement are we?   THIS would make a difference! Surely we anti-bush activists can raise $5000 or even $10000. There is no minimun donation amount, but I think most people would consider $5 affordable and reasonable.  If not, whatever you can afford is fine. Shoot, if we get 5000 people to donate $2 each, or10,000 people to donate $1, we're on our way. I already have 3 pledges of $100 and one for $50, so we've got $350 in the kitty and are off to a good start. If for any reason this effort fails and this doesn't work out, all the money donated will be returned, less the 2.9% +$0.30 cent fee that PayPal takes for business and premier accounts.

Please join in and contribute whatever you can, no matter how little. Every dollar counts and every dollar will help.

If you have text mail or the link isn't active or generates an error message, copy and paste this into your browser:

(I don't understand why the text link doesn't work all the time and I don't have anymore time to try figure it out. If all else fails, the name of the account is Zogby Impeachment Poll and the email address is impeachbush@safe-mail.net. Either one, probably the email address should get you to the right place. Uggh. )

Here are the details of how it will work.

We could either have our own poll, if we had a lot of questions, or we could be included in what they call the "bi-monthly omnibus" with only one question or a few. We would be provided with the poll results and all the demographic breakdowns: age, religion, sex. red state/blue state, etc.

The cost is $2000 for the first question, $1000 for every additional question. (There is a discrepancy on the cost of the first question, it may only be $1000.)

We also need to have people submit the questions they would like asked.  You need to take some time with this and try to phrase the questions the way poll questions are worded, so there is no implications or slanting. I have a Zogby poll, provided by Luke/Lukery who started this whole issue going that I have uploaded to the files section of Aggressive Progressives so those members can check it out. I will send the poll to any owner who wants it for the file section of their group.

I'd also like to get a website up, one that looks decent, one page is all that is necessary. I'll buy the domain name and pay for the hosting. Is there anyone  out there who does web pages and would like to volunteer?  (Maybe I can do it myself, but I haven't done a web page in 3 years, so I'm rusty and not up to the latest technology and I'd like it to look somewhat professional.)

I'd ideally like to raise at least $10,000 to ask an array of questions, on impeaching bush and cheney, opening a new investigation on 911, the plame case, criminal charges for Katrina, etc.

Zogby responds to call for new impeachment poll

Says he would consider poll if paid

A defiant blogger has taken U.S. pollster John Zogby to task, saying he flip-flopped after stating he would survey the American public again on whether they thought President George W. Bush should be impeached.

Zogby, in turn, told RAW STORY his poll questions are meant to respond to the vagaries of public opinion, not to become part of a “cause celebre.”

Zogby polled Americans in June as to whether they would support impeaching President Bush if it were proved he had misled the nation about his reasons for going to war in Iraq. Forty-two percent said they would support impeaching the president under that condition.

The day the poll was released, Zogby went on MSNBC’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann. When asked whether he would raise the question again, he said: “We'll test it periodically, probably in a month from now. Again, no-one is really talking about it, but it is a good barometric reading.”

Zogby did not poll on impeachment again.

This has not made Luke Ryland, an Australian based blogger (Wotisitgood4.blogspot.com) who tracks U.S. politics, happy. After no poll on impeachment appeared in successive months, he began corresponding with Zogby’s firm.

“When Zogby says ‘no-one,’ he means that the punditocracy isn't talking about it,” Ryland says. “That is to say, 42 percent of the American people are seriously thinking about the impeachment of the President despite the apparent media lockdown.”

Ryland contacted Zogby in August. He asked when the pollster might raise the question again.

“We'll skip the summer and get back to it in September,” Zogby replied.

Come September, Ryland emailed again. A member of Zogby’s firm replied: “We have decided to not to ask the impeachment question again unless it is raised in Congress.”

When Zogby first polled on impeachment, the Downing Street documents had spawned a firestorm among Washington liberals, leading some grassroots activists to call on Congress to consider impeachment. The documents showed that the Bush and Blair Administrations were aggressively pursuing their case for war despite knowing there was scant evidence of Iraq weapons programs. In one document, the chief of British intelligence is quoted as saying that officials were trying to “fix” intelligence to fit the policy.

Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) spearheaded the charge, demanding that the Administration turn over any and all documents relating to the memos.

The issue, however, died without fanfare.

“What happened officially was nothing,” Zogby told RAW STORY. “There was no movement -- at least no credible movement -- pushing for impeachment, and secondly, I did not intend or never intend as a pollster to part of a cause celebre.

“In that sense I opted to not ask it because it's not on the official radar screen and I want to ensure that I’m not used by either side,” he added.

Zogby says Ryland isn’t the only one who’s pushed him to do another impeachment poll.

“One blogger wrote an sent me an email saying I was part of a conspiracy now, and another said I have a constitutional duty,” he said.

The veteran barometer of public opinion notes that he’s gone farther than other polling agencies by examining the President’s approval ratings in the context of other presidents.

“In the last poll I did the horse race against every president from Jimmy Carter,” he remarked. “I thought that was interesting and revealing, and equally revealing was that I did the horse race again with John Kerry. To me, that was a lot of meat for a lot of interesting conversation and analysis.”

“But I don’t see myself playing the role of leading the charge for impeachment,” he added. “That was not my intent.”

Ryland dismisses such justifications.

"Zogby's justifications for not asking the impeachment question are spurious -- evidenced by the simple fact that he has already asked the question,” he wrote in an email. “The only condition that has changed since then is that the president's approval ratings have plummeted.”

"Over the summer, Zogby's position has morphed from 'probably in a month' to 'We'll get back to it in September' to 'we aim to remain impartial' to 'there is no constitutional duty here.' Zogby says that he won't be pressured to ask the impeachment question - but his constantly changing position leaves the distinct impression that he has been pressured NOT to ask it."

Ryland goes further: “Given Karl Rove's reputation, it would be surprising if he didn't try to pressure Zogby.”

Zogby says he hasn’t foreclosed the possibility of polling on impeachment again.

“I might ask it again, but I won’t be pressured to ask it,” he said. “If somebody wants to hire us to ask it, I’d consider that.”

Correction: Mr. Ryland's first name is Luke; his blogging name is Lukery.

The Buck Stops with Us by Carol Wolman

Report of the Alameda County Meet-up group- 9/26/05

Since the Congress is so corrupt, it is up to we the people to get rid of the criminals in the White House.  In the East Bay, Northern California, we are using the meetup format for grass roots organizing.

Seven of us met and discussed ways and means of impeaching Bush
and Cheney.  it was generally agreed that we have to focus on
the next election, making impeachment the central issue of the
campaign.

The following points were discussed:
  • Everyone should sign up online at http://impeachBush.meetup.com/ . This site has documents, a discussion group, notices for future meetings. It is our organizing tool. We will meet at least monthly.  If your locale has no meetup group yet, you can start one.

  • We the people have ultimate authority under the US Constitution. This authority includes the right to impeach officials who are guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors. The authority is delegated to our elected representatives in Congress.

  • The Downing Street Memo (DSM) strongly implies a high crime: that the Bush administration lied to Congress, the UN, and the American people about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, that Bush and Cheney knew there were none, and "twisted the facts and intelligence to fit the policy" (DSM). On this basis, John Conyers (D-MI), the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, has already conducted informal hearings as to whether there is a basis for impeachment.

  • The current Republican Congress will not investigate grounds for impeaching Bush and Cheney. However, all members of the House and 1/3 of the Senate will be standing for election in the fall of 2006. Our strategy must be to make sure that impeachment is THE central issue of the 2006 elections.

  • We need to start with our own District Nine representative, Barbara Lee, who is in favor of impeachment but for political reasons is not willing to publicly take that stand at the moment. She is a brave, outspoken politician, and we must make her listen to us, and speak out on impeachment.  Each meetup can hold round table discussions with their Representative, and if that person is not willing to take a stand for impeachment, run a candidate against him/her.

  • We must network with other districts, through http://impeachBush. meetup.com and other groups working for impeachment, to coordinate strategy. I suggest that we try to run candidates, of whatever party, in as many Congressional districts as possible, who will advocate impeachment and make sure the press covers the issue. The Green party endorsed impeachment in June 2005- we can work with them, and any other candidate who will speak out on impeachment.

  •  The idea of a special prosecutor, as was done with
    Clinton, was also explored.

Other suggestions included reaching out to other community groups, conducting local polls, working with minority parties such as the Greens who endorse impeachment, holding public forums.
Impeachment is possible.  It is peaceful, legal and democratic.

In the name of the Prince of Peace, Carol Wolman
