Why the recount matters by Carol Wolman

Dear Friends,

Several articles have come my way in recent days saying that the recount is a waste of time, and that nothing can stop George W. Bush from being inaugurated on January 20th.

Even if this is true- and no one can predict the future with 100% accuracy- the recount is still very important, for the following reasons:

1) It is a clear statement that the sacredness of the vote still matters to some people, matters enough to expend enormous amounts of time, energy and money on investigation.

2) It is giving opponents of Bush a rallying point and a way to carry on the opposition.

3) It is a signal to the rest of the world that true patriotism is still alive and well in the US.

4) Given the Bush viciousness and tendency to retaliate, those that step out, like Conyers, may be putting themselves personally at risk.  The crimes at the top are heinous indeed, and courage and integrity are the qualities we need to oppose them.  The recount battle is strengthening us for trials to come.

5) Enough evidence of registration- and vote- tampering has turned up to undermine the credibility of the 2004 election, and thus the legitimacy of Bush's second term.  He put an enormous effort into making sure that there is no question that he was duly elected this time.  Unfortunately, he was not content with working hard and spending lots of money, not even with running a vicious smear campaign against Kerry.  No, he had to guarantee the results by fixing the machines all across the country.

The more attention can be brought to this fact, the better.  Bush's second term is just as illegitimate as the first.

6) There is always the chance of a miracle.  Perhaps the true spirit of God- truth, justice, integrity- will sweep the Congress on January 6th, and they will reject the illegitimate Ohio electors.  To sign a petition for this, go to

The LORD comes,
he comes to rule the earth.
He shall rule the world with justice
and the peoples with his constancy.

many antichrists

It's hard to count all the antichrists.  Even before his inauguration, while the outcome of the election is still being disputed, Bush has purged his administration of moderates, "reality-based" thinkers, people with enough integrity to tell him the truth rather than what he wants to hear.  Instead, we have monsters like Albert "torture" Gonzales coming on board.

Rumsfeld continues his lies about how we are "winning" in Iraq, Cheney continues to push more tax cuts to scuttle the economy, and the antichrist in chief can't be bothered with the troubles of Asians swamped by a tsunami.

They even act like antichrists to one another. "The transition to President Bush's second term, filled with backstage betrayals, plots and pathologies, would make for an excellent chapter of I, Claudius."  Sidney Blumenthal- UK Guardian  http://www.truthout.org/docs_04/123104D.shtml

Children, it is the last hour;
and just as you heard that the antichrist was coming,
so now many antichrists have appeared.
Thus we know this is the last hour.
