The sickness of Americans by Carol Wolman

 

The whole world is marveling that Americans are still tolerating the Bush regime.  The Democrats are supine, with an occasional salvo of criticism.  The people are restless, but appear to be helpless.

 

Reports come out daily about the hypocrisy, mendacity and destructiveness of this administration.  I found three with no effort:

This demonstrates effectively that Bush is in office illegitimately, having stolen both the 2000 and 2004 elections.

Chilling summary that takes us step by step through all the contradictory stories put out during the unfolding of 9-11, and convincing evidence that it was planned and executed by the US government.  How can we overlook the obvious?  The USAF scrapped its standard procedures and did not scramble fighters- an obvious stand down order.  The president deliberately ignored the attack.  The towers could not have been demolished by planes striking them, there must have been a controlled demolition.  And so forth.

Roberts examines the disjunction between the propaganda about the current state of the Iraq occupation and the reality, that the US with all its might is losing to 20,000 "insurgents".

 

The treasury is bankrupt, the environment is being destroyed, our freedoms are rapidly eroding, and still the American people do nothing.  What is wrong?

 

There are various possible explanations.  Surely the Democrats are not helping, by meekly going along with the Bush program, for the most part.  They will pick on this or that issue- Supreme Court nominees, save the Arctic, but will not address the underlying problem, which is the repeated commission of high crimes and misdemeanors by this administration.

 

The media are controlled, to be sure, but with the internet, there are plenty of alternative sources of news.  Most Americans are either online or have easy access to the internet via libraries, internet cafes, etc.  If people want to be informed of the truth, they can be.

 

Are people too frightened of retaliation to work for impeachment?  The Bush administration is known for smearing people, getting them fired, various forms of harassment.  Yet the gulags, the midnight raids, the disappearances that some have predicted have not occurred, at least not yet, although if one is Muslim or an immigrant, the story is darker.  Still, the bloggers, canvassers, writers for peace, impeachment, justice, are mostly still vociferous.  Bush says he believes in freedom of speech, and so far his administration has found less heavy handed forms of control than operate under true fascist regimes.

 

What then explains the passivity, the docility of the American public in the face of egregious behavior on the part of the administration?  One could point to unwillingness to challenge authority, conformity, denial of the extent of the problem, desire to believe in a strong authority figure to protect against all the terrors of our times. 

 

I believe that the deepest answ er is a form of codependence, on the part of the American people, with the crassmaterialism and willingness to bend or break the rules that the Bush people live by.  It's all about money for Bush, tax breaks for his rich cronies, no-bid contracts for Halliburton and Carlyle group, easement of costly environmental, consumer and labor restrictions for friendly corporations. expensive military programs.  The American people now value money and the symbols of money- the SUV, the private home,- more than they value justice, truth, fairness to other countries, the good reputation of the US in the eyes of the world.  We tolerate Bush because he keeps the stock market high, keeps the oil flowing (until recently), keeps the American dream of wealth alive, even as we are in reality becoming impoverished.

 

Loving money and the things it buys more than loving one's neighbor, the future of one's progeny, and the godly things of life such as truth and justice, is a sickness.  The materialism of Americans is killing us all.   The only cure is spiritual, a refocusing on the eternal values that keep a society healthy.  We need a spiritual renewal, an influx of Christ consciousness, to get us back on track.  Then we will evict the false Christians from office.
