do unto others by Carol Wolman

Matthew 7:12 (King James Version)
12Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

I heard The Golden Rule for the first time when I was 6 or 7.  It made perfect sense to me then, and it still does.  As a child I instinctively knew that kindness was usually repaid with kindness and nastiness with nastiness, and that one got along much better by being kind and having a reputation for kindness.  As an adult, I understand that I feel much better about myself when I am kind, and tend to be ashamed when I am cruel.

The US has at least pretended to operate by this rule vis-a-vis other nations, although the iron fist of imperialism was hidden in the velvet glove of foreign aid for the past 100 years, at least.  But now the gloves are off.  The US is frankly a rogue nation, and has abandoned the Golden Rule.  Imagine if invaders stole our oil, slaughtered our people, spread uranium dust around our country, tortured and humiliated people at random,- how would we react?

The supreme irony is that the US is led by a self-proclaimed Christian who says that Jesus is his favorite philosopher.  Yet the basic philosophical principle- do unto others- is blatantly ignored by the hypocritical Bush.
The same is true of many American "Christians"- they are profaning the holy name, if you ask me- who still support Bush and his illegal and immoral invasion and destruction of Iraq.
