Carol - I agree that we need a Peace Party.  And it would be great if all people who want peace could join together in one Party, but there is always the question of under whose Platform do we join?
When there are disagreements about tactics and strategy, it is often better to remain separate and work together on those areas on which we agree, rather than deal with endless internal strife.
Unfortunately, the Green Party's Cobb/LaMarche campaign corrupted itself and badly harmed itself (lost ballot status in at least 10 states) by supporting the war-monger, Kerry, so they cannot be trusted to truly be a "peace" party when the pressure is on.  They caved to the Democratic Party's heavy pressure, so they aren't independent anymore, merely the left wing of the D. Party.
Ralph Nader did run a principled antiwar campaign, but he was demonized by the hysteria of the "OMG, OMG, anybody but Bush" Democratic Party.  The D. Party also took over and shut down the antiwar movement for the duration of the campaign, and it's barely getting revived.
I'm tired of internal party politics and have decided to run for Governor of Maine as an Independent.
I have already announced, even though the election is 18 months away.  I announced early because we activists without money have to have a headstart to get the word out.
My website is http://www.cleanearth.net if you'd like to visit, and I do need donations to get started, no more than $100. from any individual.
When I get on the ballot in 2006, the designation will be Common Sense Party.  I will make sure it's a Peace Party as well as an Environmental Party and a Democracy Party, fighting for the right of citizens to make the decisions that affect our lives.  If we ran the World by Citizens Referendum, you can bet there would be genuine peace amongst the people of the World.
I'd appreciate it if you could put this out on your list.
I'm allowed to accept these up-to-$100. donations from anywhere, and I encourage people to read the materials on my website (most of which are op-eds I've written) so they know where I stand.
Thanks, and may we succeed soon.   I don't like asking for help, being a long-time independent, volunteer environmental and political activist, but I have to now if our program is to move forward.
In moments when I feel I need more strength than I have, I ask for it and usually feel it descending upon me, from whence I do not know.  It works when one is trying to do the right things.
Thanks, People, for any help you can send.  All will be used for good, I promise.

Call for a Peace Party by Carol Wolman

John 14: 27Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you:.

Both major parties in the US are war parties.  During the presidential campaign, Bush and Kerry vied for the title of commander-in-chief of the military.  The major campaign theme was Bush's disgraceful military record vs. the vicious campaign against Kerry's purple hearts.  Both candidates called for increased military spending.

The peace candidate was Dennis Kucinich, who continues to call for a cabinet level Department of Peace.  David Cobb, the Green candidate, also advocated peace, as did most of the other third party candidates.

Many Democrats reluctantly voted for Kerry, feeling that even though he is a warmonger, at least he would do something for the environment.  Yet most Democrats, in fact most Americans, yearn for peace.

The military budget is out of control, and is draining the wealth of the American people.  The nuclear arms race is heating up again, and with it the ultimate threat of nuclear war.  Meanwhile, the US is using "depleted" uranium weaponry in its "limited" wars and spreading radioactive dust over large regions of the globe.  This dust corrupts the gene pool forever.

War corrupts the morals of our youth, who are taught that killing and torture are acceptable.  The war machine has taken over the organs of truth, the media, and is feeding lies and confusion to the American people.  War is distracting us from the urgent business of our times- to rein in consumption of fossil fuels so that global warming can be slowed or stopped.

Peace is the first priority now.  Cannot all the forces of peace create a new political party, with a new focus?  The two major parties are tools of the corporations and their armies.  A peace party could righteously appeal to all people who want peace, and to all true Christians.

In the name of the Prince of Peace,  Carol Wolman
