Laying the groundwork for impeachment by Carol Wolman

Laying the groundwork for impeachment by Carol Wolman

Matthew 13: 45Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls:  46Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

The current ills of the US all flow from the venality and belligerence of the Bush administration.  The bankrupt treasury, the increase in terrorism, the gutting of the Constitution and Bill of Rights, the mayhem inflicted on our environment, the blackening of our reputation- all of them result from stupid, self-serving policies of Bush, Cheney et al.

Progressives have focused on one issue after another, trying to stem the tide of disaster.  The overriding issue is the criminal behavior of these politicians, who line the pockets of their respective corporations, Carlyle and Halliburton, at the expense of "we the people", whom they are supposed to be serving.  Impeachment is the goal that will trump all the others.  Get rid of this administration, and we can start to reverse the damage they have inflicted upon our country and our planet.

In their arrogance and greed, they have repeatedly lied and flouted domestic and international law, and gotten away with it through tactics of intimidation, bribery and false piety.  Now the lies are starting to unravel.  But this cabal is crazed with power and will not relinquish it easily.  They are ruthless, and control the media, the Congress, and much of the judiciary branch.

Still, there are people of integrity, in Congress and elsewhere, who are starting to lay the groundwork for impeachment.  Joe Wilson was the first to call Bush a liar (over the nonexistent yellowcake from Niger that Saddam was supposed to be buying), and has not stopped denouncing the outing of his CIA agent wife.  Patrick Fitzgerald, the Special Prosecutor investigating this leak, is relentlessly investigating the likelihood of obstruction of justice by the administration, which has been unwilling to first name, and now fire, the chief advisors to the president and veep, Rove and Libby, who evidently are the main leakers.

Impeachment tends to be a political, partisan activity, as shown by the Clinton situation.  His sexual pecadillos hurt no one except, perhaps, his wife, yet the Repugs went after him simply to discredit his administration.  We are in a very different situation now.  The crimes of the Bush administration are grave, and very damaging to America.  The effort to impeach Bush and Cheney should transcend party.  All patriots, anyone who truly loves the US, should be happy to see them go.

Following are the opening paragraphs of three articles detailing recent moves by progressive members of Congress to gather evidence for impeachable offenses.  You can mobilize grassroots support by collecting signatures on a letter to John Conyers, ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, asking him to proceed with formal hearings into the grounds for impeachment.  The letter can be printed out from: http://DeepEndNews.com/MEMORANDUM.htm  Make plenty of copies- your friends will want one to fill with 15 signatures and fax to Conyers.

Rep. Barbara Lee Introduces Resolution of Inquiry into Iraq War Planning

Congresswoman Barbara Lee (Dem., Calif.) today introduced - along with 26 co-sponsors - a Resolution of Inquiry in the House of Representatives which, if passed, will require the White House and the State Department to "transmit all information relating to communication with officials of the United Kingdom between January 1, 2002, and October 16, 2002, relating to the policy of the United States with respect to Iraq." ...

From Conyers...
Dear Inspector General Fine:

We write to request that you immediately commence an investigation of the Department of Justice's handling of the investigation of the leak of the identity of a covert CIA operative's identity by high-ranking Administration officials. Press reports and other information obtained by House Judiciary Committee Democrats appear to demonstrate that on at least two separate occasions, DOJ personnel acted to permit delays in the investigation, which may have resulted in the loss or destruction of critical evidence....

Democratic Senators Press CIA Leak Probe

WASHINGTON - More than two dozen Democratic senators on Monday asked Congress to investigate the leak of a CIA officer's identity.

"Americans deserve a Congress that holds Washington accountable for the truth about our national security," said Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., who authored the letter. "Can anyone argue with a straight face that Congress has time to look at steroid use in baseball but doesn't have the will to provide congressional oversight of the leak of a CIA agent's name?"

The letter, sent to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., and House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., said the disclosure of CIA officer Valerie Plame's name most likely compromised her safety...
