remember right and wrong? by Carol Wolman

Dear Friends,

Do you remember Dr. Martin Luther King?  He was able to mobilize America to assure equal rights for black voters through the force of moral authority.  Dr. King's divinely inspired eloquence aroused the conscience of the nation.  The media told the truth, more or less, and the people were able to judge for themselves.  A mass movement arose to right a great wrong.  It wasn't that long ago, about 50 years ago.

It was the same sense of moral authority that eventually got us out of Vietnam.  The wrong was righted.

These days, morality is turned on its head.   Although a few stalwart souls, like Cobb, Conyers, Boxer, point out that voting machines were tampered with, voters of color were harassed and prevented from registering and voting, and the election was stolen again, the media turns its back and refuses to report the story.  The people don't know, and buy the lie.  Those who care are told to "get over it", and accused of "political paranoia".

The parallels between Vietnam and Iraq are all too obvious.  Yet the current president got on TV the other day and said that the invasion was the right thing to do.  Who benefits?  Not the Iraqis, whose civil order has been destroyed, physically and socially.  Not the American people, whose children are being killed and whose pockets are being drained.  No, the big winners are Halliburton and Carlyle, the corporations of the vice-president and president.  If this isn't wrong, what is?

The very name of God has been usurped by the rulers, who claim to be anointed, as they destroy America's security, economy and ecology.  It was the same in the days of Jesus, when the Pharisees, collaborators with the oppressive Roman empire, claimed to represent God.  Jesus was crucified because He challenged the pious rulers.  MLK was assassinated because he did the same, over Vietnam.

God is on the side of the underdog, against oppressors.  He will give us the strength we need to right the wrongs of our day.  All we need to do is remember Him.

Do not forget the works of the Lord!
What we have heard and know,
and what our fathers have declared to us,
we will declare to the generation to come
The glorious deeds of the LORD and his strength.
Psalm 78: 3-4

In the name of the Prince of Peace,   Carol Wolman
