"proclaim liberty to captives"
Dear Friends,
Do you remember when Bush landed on an aircraft carrier and proclaimed an end to the invasion of Iraq, and talked about bringing liberty to the prisoners there?  Bush was quoting a Bible passage in which Jesus tells His home congregation that He is fulfilling prophecies about the messiah from 61: 1-2.  Bush in essence was claiming that mantle by quoting that particular passage (see below) and his evangelical followers understood this.
As we enter the day in which Congress is set to certify his "re-election", we must understand that Bush's electoral base sees him as "anointed" by God to fulfill prophecies of the end-time.  This claim must be vigorously disputed.  Has Bush in fact set captives free?
The Abu Ghraib scandal and more recent reports of prison abuses around the world show that the opposite is free.   Bush has imprisoned more Iraqis than Saddam ever did, killed more than Saddam ever did, and probably tortured more than Saddam ever did.
Bush is putting in place legislation that will empower him to declare any American citizen a "terrorist" and allow him to "disappear" that person indefinitely without any due process.  What is happening "over there" may soon happen here at home.
There is no way to emphasize how important it is that some Senators join Representative Conyers and the others to challenge the legitimacy of this tyrant's "election" today.  Pray for Boxer, that she have the courage to to stand up on the Senate floor and be counted.
In the name of the Prince of Peace,   Carol Wolman
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because He has anointed me
to bring glad tidings to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.
 because He has anointed me
to bring glad tidings to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.
Luke 4: 18
