Love your enemies by Carol Wolman

Matthew 5: 43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Dear Friends,

This passage has been much used of late to prove that GW Bush is not following the teachings of his favorite philosopher.  He bombs and tortures his enemies abroad.  At home he mocks and slanders them, and sometimes has them fired or even killed.

I consider GW Bush my enemy, and the enemy of my children and grandchildren.  He is destroying everything I love,- the forest, the constitution, the international treaties that have been preventing nuclear war for the past 60 years.

I find it difficult not to hate Bush.  I cannot find it in my heart to love him, much as I want to follow all the teachings of Jesus.  I do pray for him; I pray for his immortal soul, which is black with blasphemy, lies, and abuse of his high office.  Sometimes I think of him as a prisoner of his situation- his fascist family, his satanic upbringing with Skull and Bones the culmination- his privileged life, with all his sins quickly covered up and bought off by family and friends.  How could he be expected to know about truth, compassion, justice, integrity?

I pray for the truth to reach his heart, for Bush to understand that all people are equal in the eyes of God, and all deserve a fair chance at life.

As a psychiatrist, I treat many people with addiction problems, which turn them into sociopaths- willing to lie, cheat and steal in order to feed their habit.  I know that no amount of persuasion will change their ways; it takes external coercion, by way of the law.  I know many parents who pray for their grown children to be arrested, so that they won't turn up dead.  I know people who won't allow their relatives to visit, because they always steal.  It's called tough love.

I will exercise some tough love toward GW Bush.  In order for him to face his sins, he would have to be impeached, and then convicted of war crimes, lying to the American people, bribing judges, fixing voting machines, etc, etc, etc.  Maybe then he would start to listen to the One who died for his sins, and love his enemies.  I pray for his impeachment.

In the name of the Prince of Peace,  Carol Wolman
