The recent election highlights the deep division in the US body of Christ, which refers to the collective of believers.   On the one hand, there are the supporters of George W. Bush, those millions who worked hard for him and voted for him, and who believe that he is creating the reality that will bring Jesus and the second coming.  They see his warmongering and imperial ambitions as he does, ordered by God to further the reign of America, the "shining city on a hill", and its Christian influence.  To them, the evidence of lying, cheating, torturing and killing by the Bush administration are minor blemishes on God's holy work, used by Bush's enemies to persecute him.

 

On the other hand, there are the "progressive" Christians,  those who find Bush's policies to be totally at odds with the life and teachings of Jesus.  If anything, they see him as antiChrist, the deceiver who cloaks himself in the mantle of piety, but does the opposite of what he says. 

 

Something is wrong here.  If God is One, then His holy people should be united in one belief system.  Of course, the history of Christianity is riddled with religious wars- mostly Catholics vs. Protestants.  What does the Bible say that might be helpful?

 

For in Him all the fullness was pleased to dwell,
and through Him to reconcile all things for Him,
making PEACE by the blood of His cross
through Him, whether those on earth or those in heaven.

How can progressive Christians reach out to the warmongering supporters of Bush and teach them peace and reconciliation?  How do we remind them that Christ suffered and died to teach us non-violence and forgiveness, not shock and awe?
